In the early years, their stories are not mainly of triumph but of confusion, failure, violence, and the loss of civility as they sought to normalize situations and recapture lost worlds. They represented a spectrum of religious attachments. They came from England, the Netherlands, the German and Italian states, France, Africa, Sweden, and Finland, and they moved to the western hemisphere for different reasons, from different social backgrounds and cultures. A compelling, fresh account of the first great transit of people from Britain, Europe, and Africa to British North America, their involvements with each other, and their struggles with the indigenous peoples of the eastern seaboard.

I counted 4 color image pages, and 8 not full color illustrations. The main issues are with the illustrations : a few are still bound into the book, but almost all are loose, some with tears. There is a tear and pencil name on the inside endcover, pencil name on first two blank pages, hole and tape mark on page adjacent to title page, name on page 3, torn and missing image between page 10 and page 11. I have seen the tune identified as "My Dear and Only Love, Take Heed," found in John Gamble's Commonplace Book from 1659, but I haven't been able to verify that it is the same tune that I heard on Louis Killen's recording. Louis Killen attributes the work to Robert Surtees, who apparently wrote the poem in 1807, and sent it to Walter Scott in the guise of a traditional ballad. I have seen it called "Child 208," but that appears to be a completely different ballad about the same Lord Derwentwater. I pretty much remembered the tune from Louis Killen's recording on "Old Songs, Old Friends," Front Hall Records FHR-012, Voorheesville, NY, 1978. I took the tune from "Derwentwater's Farewell," and mangled it to fit Wilde's 6-line stanzas instead of the 8 lines of the original tune. Prisoner C.3.3, known outside of prison as Oscar Wilde, wrote "The Ballad of Reading Gaol." Why not take the title on its face, and sing the poem as a ballad? I liked how she used the original elements of the story and I liked that it wasn’t all easy for Elise all the time to break the curse. She writes fun stories that make you smile, and that’s an incredible plus in my book. There were some things I enjoyed in this sequel and a few that I didn’t love, but I do want to continue in the series. And I actually really like the Wild Swans fairytale (often called the Six/Seven Swans, depending on where you look). I must say I do really like the cover for this book. All Timeless Fairy Tales take place in the same world and can be read all together, or as individual, stand-alone books. It is a story of humor, love, adventure, and magic, and it is part of the top selling Timeless Fairy Tales series-a series comprised of loosely related adaptations of your favorite fairy tales. THE WILD SWANS is a retelling of the German Six Swans fairy tale and the Dutch Wild Swans fairy tale. She has to complete the shirts without uttering a word, and if she doesn’t finish the task, Arcainia and her foster-brothers will be lost. To break the curse, she must knit seven shirts made of stinging nettles, but there’s a catch. But when her step-mother, a wicked witch, curses Elise’s seven foster-brothers-the princes of Arcainia-and turns them into swans, Elise is the only one who can save them. Elise is the foster-daughter of the King of Arcainia, a mathematician, and the country’s treasurer. So far as I can judge it is not a book of the first order, but it is certainly an unusual one, and it is astonishing that no English publisher has been enterprising enought to reissue it. The English translation was published in the United States, and I have never been able to procure a copy: but copies of the French translation (the title is Nous Autres) do exist, and I have at last succeeded in borrowing one. A copy of the manuscript found its way out of the country, and the book has appeared in English, French and Czech translations, but never in Russian. We was written about 1923, and though it is not about Russia and has no direct connection with contemporary politics-it is a fantasy dealing with the twenty-sixth century AD-it was refused publication on the ground that it was ideololgically undesirable. Zamyatin, who died in Paris in 1937, was a Russian novelist and critic who published a number of books both before and after the Revolution. Looking it up in Gleb Struve's Twenty-Five Years of Soviet Russian Literature, I find its history to have been this: Several years after hearing of its existence, I have at last got my hands on a copy of Zamyatin's We, which is one of the literary curiosities of this book-burning age. |
